Child Null Subjects*

چکیده

It has often been observed that children go through a stage in their language development where they omit subjects. This occurs in children learning both pro-drop and non-pro-drop languages and poses questions for a traditional parameter-based theory of language acquisition. In this paper I give an overview of some of the existing accounts of this phenomenon, considering the patterns that emerge and the problems that each account faces. I look at both competence-based and performancebased approaches, before suggesting that we might gain new insight by integrating the existing data and findings using the pragmatic framework of Relevance Theory.

Null Subjects in Early Child English and the Theory of Economy of Projection

It is well-known that young children may omit referential subjects regardless of whether they are acquiring a pro-drop language such as Italian or a nonpro-drop language such as English. The classic proposal of Hyams (1986) according to which these early null subjects instantiate pro in both types of languages has recently come under attack from various sides. Bloom (1990, 1993) and Valian (199...

Null Allele Frequencies at HLA-G Locus in Iranian Healthy Subjects

Background: HLA-G gene contains 15 alleles including a null allele, HLA-G*0105N. Previous studies have shown that HLA-G*0105N does not encode the complete HLA-G1 or HLA-G5 isoforms but encodes a functional HLA-G protein with the ability to in-hibit NK cell cytolysis. Thus, although the biological functions of HLA-G1 and HLA-G5 proteins are abrogated, other isoforms such as HLA-G2 can replace th...

Reversing the Approach to Null Subjects: A Perspective from Language Acquisition

This paper proposes a new model for null subjects, and focuses on its implications for language development. The literature on pro-drop generally considers that not allowing null subjects is, informally speaking, the "default" option in natural languages, and appeals to particular morphosyntactic mechanisms in order to account for those languages in which the subject can be omitted. Shifting th...

Subject realization and crosslinguistic interference in the bilingual acquisition of Spanish and English: what is the role of the input?

This study investigated whether crosslinguistic interference occurs in the domain of subject realization in Spanish in a bilingual acquisition context. We were also interested in exploring whether the source of the interference is due to child-internal crosslanguage contact between English and Spanish, as is commonly assumed, or due to the nature of the language input in a bilingual family, a f...

Mutations in the Filaggrin are Predisposing Factor in Korean Children With Atopic Dermatitis

PURPOSE Filaggrin (FLG) is a key protein that facilitates the terminal differentiation of the epidermis and the formation of the skin barrier. Recent studies showed that atopic dermatitis (AD) associates closely with loss-of-function mutations in the FLG gene. Asian and European populations differ in the frequencies of FLG mutations. Several FLG mutations, including 3321delA, E2422X, K4671X, S2...
